Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a type of anxiety disorder where obsessions (unwanted thoughts) are partially and temporarily relieved by compulsions (hand washing, counting, cleaning, etc.). Anxiety significantly increases when not performing the compulsions. OCD often is accompanied with other anxiety issues, like eating disorders, depression, etc. Sometimes, people with OCD are unaware their behavior is not normal. Here is a simple self-test you can use:
If you answered "yes" to any of the last 3 questions, it's probably important that you see a psychiatrist to confirm or rule out OCD. In fact, if you answered yes to any of the above questions and you're still unsure, seeing a psychiatrist is probably a good idea, just to be on the safe side.
OCD affects over 2 million US citizens. Though it's still early, researchers are discovering family traits, possibly genetic, that may lead to OCD. Others speculate it could be caused by childhood trauma, though this seems to be the popular "cause" of most mental illnesses.
There are many effective treatments available, including anxiety medications and counseling, that have a good chance of restoring a normal, productive life. Many new medications are being investigated. Here is a page listing ways to find local sources of OCD diagnosis and treatment, including free treatment and clinical trials.
While mild anxieties can be handled with diet, exercise, self-talk, and exposure to the specific phobia, OCD is a severe anxiety disorder and should be treated by a licensed professional.
Health conditions can be frustrating and painful...sometimes even fatal. We both know there are no guaranteed cures or quick fixes, whether medicine, nutrition, herbs or anything else. Many illnesses are "incurable" from the medical standpoint. Complete healing is possible...including mind, body and spirit...from God.
