Similar to Autism, and may be the same as "High Functioning Autism," Asperger's Syndrome shows many of the same characteristics. Failure to develop relationships, interact socially or understand facial expressions or "body language." Difficulty expressing feelings. Rigid and repetitive routines. Repetitive body movements. Obsession with the details of a very narrow subject of interest.
Asperger's sufferers are often very intelligent, excelling in fields not requiring a lot of social interaction, like accounting, engineering or programming.
See a doctor if your child seems unresponsive, odd behavior or speech, or you suspect someone may be harmed.
Asperger's is more common in boys than girls. No one is certain about the causes. Some say it may be a genetic disease, others feel it could be prenatal infection.
Treatments vary depending on the ability to respond. A high IQ and some measurable early response could be promising for a successful though socially limited life. If there is little sign of progress, treatment will be similar to the more limiting forms of autism. A whole lot of relational therapy and love...little else is effective.
The best self-help remedies for this condition are love and patience, and encouragement of whatever narrow interests they have. Someone suffering Asperger's may appear to lack emotion, but it's more likely they just can't express it or understand emotional and communication signals.
Mental health conditions in children are frustrating, confusing and painful. While we all know of no cures for this condition, there is someone who can help, who cares about everyone involved...God. If you want God's help with this or any problem, go to Help From God.
