This is not the same as acrophobia, the fear of heights, though they are often related. What takes the rational discomfort of flying to Aviophobia is if the fear actually limits your life in a significant way. Do you avoid trips you want to take because of necessary air travel? Do you limit your career because such travel is required for advancement? Do you have frequent severe panic attacks when you travel by air? These are all indications you're suffering from Aviophobia.
Other phobias can be related as possible causes of Aviophobia, like claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces) and acrophobia. Other fears and anxieties can be the cause, like fear of hijacking, mid-air collisions, lack of control, etc.
To manage this phobia, drug therapies are available, if warranted. Often, learning about the safety of flying can help take the edge off.
Some people use alcohol before and during the flight, with the obvious risk of developing alcoholism. After all, if it helps with this fear, maybe it will help with all of them...not good reasoning. Some people manage their fear of flying by not flying. If you can live a normal life without flying, why go through the tension? If you do need to confront this fear, you can use calming self-talk, breathing and relaxation techniques while gradually increasing your exposure to flying.
Mental Health conditions can be frustrating and painful. We both know there are no guaranteed cures or quick fixes, whether medicine, nutrition, herbs or anything else. Many illnesses are "incurable" from the medical standpoint. Complete healing is possible...including mind, body and spirit...from God.
