ADD is short for Attention Deficit Disorder, a type of ADHD (H is for Hyperactivity). ADD children are very inattentive (daydreams, easily distracted and sidetracked), with no other symptoms. If other behavior symptoms are present, such as impulsiveness or hyperactivity, the child has the Impulsive/Hyperactive type of ADHD.
While no evidence exists to support either position, it's believed ADD is caused by a genetic defect, rather than poor discipline at home. Many believe a high carbohydrate diet is a major cause of this condition.
There are many treatments for ADD, usually including behavioral therapy and drugs. There are ongoing studies to determine what the most effective treatment is: behavioral therapy, medication, both, or none. The most common treatment is to put the child on stimulant drugs. Here's a good source of information from the National Institutes of Mental Health NIMH.
The most effective home remedies include a high protein, low carbohydrate diet and 2 cups of brewed coffee (with caffeine) in the morning. Coffee is an inexpensive and safe alternative to the drugs normally prescribed. Check with the doctor before using any home remedies.
Mental health conditions can be frustrating and painful when we're talking about our children. We both know there are no guaranteed cures or quick fixes, whether medicine, nutrition, herbs or anything else. Many illnesses are "incurable" from the medical standpoint. Complete healing is possible...including mind, body and spirit...from God. If you want God's help with this or any problem, go to Help From God.
