Hydrophobia is the advanced stage of a water-specific anxiety. Phobias are distinguished from rational fear because they cause severe, painful anxiety, having a limiting or disabling effect on our lives. Hydrophobia is usually first noticed with an unwillingness to learn to swim, or even to get into a boat. Often, this phobia has caused someone such extreme panic after falling into the water, that their rescuer wasn't able to help them. The fear brought about the very thing feared.
Hydrophobia is believed to stem from one or more early childhood experiences with almost drowning or seeing a friend drown. With the advent of early, and often unsupervised, TV. viewing, many such events could be viewed by children who are too young to reason that someone isn't actually drowning.
Numerous therapies have been developed to combat phobias, including medicines and psychological therapies. If you're prescribed a medicine, make sure you get psychological therapy as well, to eventually eliminate the medicine.
Due to the nature of hydrophobia, we recommend professional psychological treatment over self help. Normally, we would recommend facing your fear gradually. Unfortunately, even if we recommended a friend be present when you do your exercises to face hydrophobia, it's possible the exercise could cause you to panic beyond their ability to help. Since panic and water are a dangerous mix, please seek professional help for this phobia.
