Definition Of Cancer:

Cancer is most simply defined as cells growing out of control. When this growth is not threatening in any way, it's called benign. When the growth of a type of cancer presents a danger, it's called malignant. Here are the best-selling books on fighting different cancer types. The rate a particular malignant cancer grows is known as cancer grading. The extent to which a malignant cancer has grown is measured using cancer staging from stage 0 (least damage) to stage 4 (most damage). These stages and grades also serve to help determine what treatments will be most effective in fighting the cancer.

For the purposes of www.way2hope.org we will not get into the scientific types (or names) of cancer (carcinoma, sarcoma, etc.). We'll also avoid the scientific names for the stages of cancer growth (in situ, metastatic, etc.). While these classifications of different types or stages of cancer are useful to health care professionals, we common folk are just confused. Instead, the different types of cancer we're referring to are more commonly identified by body parts (breast, bone, etc.). When a type of cancer is commonly known by it's scientific name (melanoma, leukemia, etc.) we'll use that name. If you're discussing a specific diagnosis of cancer with your doctor, get the exact scientific name, stage and body system(s) it was found in (in writing) for more detailed research.
