Atherosclerosis is known as the silent killer because many don't see any indication of disease until they have a stroke or heart attack. If your family blood line has a history of stroke, heart attack or kidney failure, you're in a high risk category. Many use the ear lobe test (a diagonal crease in your ear lobe) to see if the disease may be present, but this is not conclusive and only occurs after some arteries are already blocked. The best way to find out is through blood test (complete lipid panel) every year. Anyone with a significant risk (see Causes) should have this test done yearly from their late 20's on. For more on this deadly illness, see these top-selling books on Atherosclerosis Disease.
Atherosclerosis, also called "Hardened Arteries" is caused by fat deposits inside the arteries. Cholesterol, especially LDL Cholesterol, builds up over time until the artery is blocked, causing heart attack, stroke, Kidney Disease or other serious illnesses. Several factors can contribute to Atherosclerosis, including family history, a Thyroid Problem, low fiber/high fat diet, Diabetes, lack of exercise, smoking, and excessive coffee drinking.
Before Atherosclerosis becomes serious, there are many types of drug therapy to be used in addition to diet and exercise (see What You Can Do below) to control fats in the blood and prevent serious complications. Currently popular drugs right now are "statin" drugs which do a very good job of controlling Cholesterol but deplete essential nutrients. Once these complications have arisen, there are many potentially dangerous surgical options to expand or replace damaged arteries, to replace damaged organs, drugs to thin the blood so it will flow to the brain, etc. When a doctor gives you a medication, make sure to investigate it to discover the side effects and to overcome any nutrient deficiencies the drug creates (see below).
The best thing to do about Atherosclerosis involves a low fat diet and aerobic exercise. Quit smoking and keep your coffee below 4 cups per day (for espresso drinkers...that's one shot). To help fight the causes of this disease and to overcome deficiencies caused by medical drugs you can supplement your diet with natural Multi-Vitamins and Multi-Minerals, along with extra doses of the following:
Antioxidants; including
Beta Carotene,
