While there are no direct causes, some of the factors that may increase the risk of breast cancer are family history, early menstruation, no children or first child after 40, alcoholic beverages, history of breast disease, radiation to the breasts, taking hormones or birth control pills, being white. It's also pretty well documented that being overweight, lack of exercise and improper nutrition weaken your immune system and make you more likely to get cancer.
In early stages, the breasts can be saved and surgery is performed to remove the known tumors and some of the local lymph nodes. This is why regular examination and mammograms are so important. In some cases, this will be accompanied by radiation of the breasts and lymph nodes. In the middle stages, one or both breasts, associated lymph nodes and sometimes other tissue in the area must be removed to prevent further spread of the cancer. Chemotherapy is often used after surgery to fight the spread of any cancer cells that may have been missed. The later stages are not always fatal. If you've been diagnosed with stage 3 or 4 breast cancer, keep fighting. We're discovering new methods all the time. Many of the chemotherapies being used can prolong your life and improve the quality of your life even in the later stages.
